Greece and Greek-Australians

Greece is an ancient country with an ancient and modern language and civilisation.

Greece has an ancient tradition with the arts and culture from the Homeric epics of the Iliad and Odyssey, the philosophers, the classical fifth century tragedies and comedies, the Parthenon, Byzantine churches and icons, medieval and Modern Greek poetry and folk literature. Modern Greek cultural life includes literary writers, contemporary music composers, folk songs, rebetika, dancing, and film makers. A large number of theatres in Athens and other Greek cities contribute to Modern Greek cultural life.

There is a continuous Greek presence in Australia since 1829. Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries Greeks in Australia played a significant role in the restaurant, café and food industries. In 1947 the Greek-Australian community numbered around 15,000 Greek-born persons. In 1952 an Australian-Greek Migration Agreement was signed and for the next two decades about 250,000 Greeks migrated to Australia. According to the 2006 Census 365,000 people stated their ancestry as Greek. People of Greek descent can be found today in all parts of Australia, in Parliament, in the Universities, in the Press and other mass media, in the schools, in the professions, in the trade unions, and virtually in all walks of Australian life.
